Prize-giving Ceremony:

An invitation to the event “An Aperitivo with Marco Polo” on the occasion of the Award Ceremony of the International Literary Competition “The Return of Marco Polo: Travels, Memories, and Adventures to the Italian Roots” has been sent to all participants and dignitaries.

Winners of the competition will be announced as part of the ceremony.

The Italian Government has declared 2024 to be the “Year of Italian Roots in the World”, calling on all Italian migrants living abroad and their descendants to visit the places where their ancestors came from.

Coinciding with 700 years after the passing of Italian explorer Marco Polo, our organisation has instituted an International Literary Competition titled: “The Return of Marco Polo: Travels, Memories, and Adventures to the Italian Roots”.

The competition aims to promote Italian literary creativity, inspiring a global audience with the extraordinary figure of Marco Polo and the rich Italian cultural heritage abroad, through a real or imaginary return to the places of migration.

Participants will be able to narrate real or imaginary returns to the life, footsteps and lands from which their ancestors departed, introducing their audience to the feelings, colours, smells and experiences of a return to their roots.

The Executive Officer’s Message

It gives me great pleasure to offer this message on behalf of the Marco Polo – The Italian School of Sydney. Having named our community language school after this personality, provides us with an opportunity to honour the remarkable life of such renowned explorer and Italian compatriot.

In 2024, we are excited to contribute to the worldwide celebrations on the occasion of the 7th centenary of the death of the explorer Marco Polo through the establishment of an International Literary Competition titled:

“The Return of Marco Polo: Travels, Memories, and Adventures to the Italian Roots“.

This cultural literary initiative aligns with the Year of Italian Roots in the World declared by the Italian Government and seeks to inspire a global audience with the remarkable story of Marco Polo returning to Italy from the Far East.

Competition Rules

1) The competition is open to all; participation is through the submission of up to three unpublished stories, freely inspired by the theme of returning to one’s Italian roots, in Italian, English, or regional dialect, with the respective translation.

The competition coincides with the Year of Italian Roots in the World and aims to promote Italian literary creativity, inspiring a global audience with the extraordinary figure of Marco Polo and the rich Italian cultural heritage abroad through a real or imaginary return to the lands of migration.

Works should range from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 8 A4 pages, “New Times Roman” font (size 12), 1.5 spacing, leaving a margin of at least 2.5 cm on all four sides of the sheet.

Texts must be submitted exclusively in digital format, WORD (.doc or .docx), through the portal below or sent to the competition email address learning@cnansw.org.au.

The deadline for submitting entries is strictly 30 July 2024. Works sent after the deadline will not be considered. The email transmission date will be the decisive factor.

The author assumes responsibility for the authenticity of the work. Each submitted work must have a cover page with the following information:

Story Title (different from the Competition Title)
Author (name, surname, date of birth, place of birth)
Contact Information (residential address, mobile, and email)

2) Participation is free. Works admitted to the competition will be published in an anthology released on the occasion of the VII Centenary of the explorer Marco Polo’s death, available for purchase from the award ceremony until copies are exhausted.

3) Prizes: First prize: $1,000 (one thousand dollars), certificate, and trophy; second prize: $500 (five hundred dollars), certificate, and trophy; third prize: $250 (two hundred fifty dollars), certificate, and trophy. Prize values are in Australian dollars.

Honourable Mentions and Merit Citations may also be awarded. Surprise prizes will be given for works deemed worthy of recognition.

Prizes will be presented during an event featuring Marco Polo, to be held in Sydney, Australia, by 31 December 2024. The exact date, chosen location, and details of the award ceremony will be communicated in a timely manner to interested parties.

Winners will not be notified in advance but will be revealed during the award ceremony. Participants unable to attend the ceremony in person may participate via video link.

All participants will receive a participation certificate.

Participants grant the right to reproduce their works on posters, brochures, or other printed materials, as well as a release for free promotional use on the website and social media pages (Instagram, Facebook, etc.).

The works, made anonymous for the selection process, will be examined by a qualified jury composed of experts in education, literature, and critique. The judges’ verdict will be final and irrevocable.

In case of any impediments and/or force majeure, rules and contents of this Regulation may undergo changes or cancellations.

All updates related to the competition will be published on the website www.cnansw.org.au.

Finally, participants authorise the treatment of personal information, which will be used exclusively for the purposes of the competition and within the cultural initiatives of the VII Centenary of the explorer Marco Polo’s death, in compliance with the law.

Bando del Concorso Letterario

1) Il concorso è aperto a tutti; si può partecipare inviando fino a tre racconti inediti, liberamente ispirati al tema di ritorno all’Italia delle radici, in lingua italiana, inglese o in dialetto regionale, con relativa traduzione.

Il concorso coincide con l’Anno delle Radici Italiane nel Mondo e intende promuovere la creatività letteraria italiana, ispirando un pubblico globale alla straordinaria figura di Marco Polo e alla ricca eredità culturale italiana all’estero attraverso il ritorno reale o immaginario alle terre di emigrazione.

Le opere dovranno estendersi da un minimo di 3 a un massimo di 8 cartelle A4, carattere “New Times Roman” (corpo 12), spaziatura 1.5, e dovranno lasciare un margine di almeno 2.5 cm ai quattro lati del foglio.

I testi devono essere inviati attraverso il portale dedicato nel sito web (di seguito) oppure all’indirizzo e-mail del concorso learning@cnansw.org.au, esclusivamente in versione digitale, formato WORD (.doc oppure .docx).

La data di scadenza per la presentazione dei lavori è inderogabilmente il 30 luglio 2024. Le opere inviate oltre la data di scadenza non saranno tenute in considerazione. Farà fede la data di trasmissione dell’e-mail.

L’autore si assume la responsabilità dell’autenticità dell’opera. Ciascun elaborato inviato deve avere una pagina di frontespizio recante le seguenti informazioni:

Titolo del racconto (diverso dal titolo del Concorso)
Autore (nome, cognome, data di nascita, luogo di nascita)
Recapito (indirizzo di residenza, cellulare ed e-mail)

2) La partecipazione è gratuita. I lavori ammessi al concorso saranno pubblicati in un’antologia edita in occasione del VII Centenario dalla morte dell’esploratore Marco Polo, acquistabile a partire dalla cerimonia di premiazione e fino ad esaurimento copie.

3) I premi: Per il primo classificato una somma di $1,000 (mille dollari), attestato e trofeo; per il secondo classificato una somma di $500 (cinquecento dollari), attestato e trofeo; per il terzo classificato una somma di $250 (duecentocinquanta dollari), attestato e trofeo. Le valute dei premi si intendono in dollari australiani.

Verranno inoltre attribuite Menzioni d’Onore e Segnalazioni di Merito. Ci saranno infine dei premi a sorpresa per i lavori considerati meritevoli.

I premi saranno consegnati nel corso di un evento a ricordo dell’esploratore Marco Polo da tenersi a Sydney, Australia, entro il 31 dicembre 2024. La data esatta, il luogo prescelto e le modalità di svolgimento della cerimonia di premiazione saranno comunicati in tempo utile ai diretti interessati.

I vincitori non saranno avvisati preventivamente, ma si sapranno solo durante la cerimonia di premiazione. I concorrenti impossibilitati a partecipare alla cerimonia in presenza potranno assistervi in collegamento video. Tutti i partecipanti riceveranno un attestato di partecipazione.

I partecipanti concedono il diritto di riprodurre le proprie opere su manifesti, pieghevoli o altri stampati nonché la liberatoria per utilizzo gratuito promozionale sul sito e nelle pagine social (Instagram, Facebook ecc.).

4) Le opere, rese anonime per le operazioni di selezione, saranno esaminate da una giuria qualificata composta da esperti dell’educazione, della letteratura e della critica. Il verdetto dei giudici sarà definitivo ed irrevocabile.

In caso di eventuali impedimenti e/o a cause di forza maggiore, norme e contenuti del presente Regolamento potranno subire variazioni o cancellazioni. Tutti gli aggiornamenti relativi al Concorso saranno pubblicati nel sito www.cnansw.org.au.

I partecipanti, infine, autorizzano al trattamento dei dati personali, che saranno utilizzati esclusivamente ai fini del Concorso e nell’ambito delle iniziative culturali del VII Centenario dalla morte dell’esploratore Marco Polo, nel rispetto delle normative.
